Movie Notes: Art Tatum - The Art of Jazz Piano

Here's an effective documentary about one of the most important -- and, for some reason, still occasionally overlooked -- greats from the history of jazz: pianist Art Tatum. This documentary features interviews with Marian McPartland, Hank Jones, George Shearing, and others, and it contains a great deal of footage of Tatum himself performing. Bassist, composer, and bandleader Charles Mingus was for many a larger than life figure -- and his views on music, performing, performers, and much more are on display in a collection of interviews from late in his life. Journalist John F. Goodman is the author of Mingus Speaks, which gives us Mingus according to Mingus, out from under the underdog.
