Crate Notes - Record Store Day and Hip Hop Is Read

Two items for today, pirate minions of note.  First up, all of you vinyl fans should be sure to get out on Saturday, April 19, and support your local independent record store as part of National Record Store Day.  Not only will you find music-lovers and other similar nerdery in those shops, but many artists provide special one-day only vinyl only releases.  Here's a list of special releases for the day.

I also stumbled on this great website for those who might be curious about where the original samples for some of their favorite hip hop tracks came from.  Hip Hop Is Read has been building a Sample Set Index for some time now, and it's a fascinating resources to explore -- be ready to set aside time to listen, though.

You probably know drummer Stanton Moore from his work with Galactic and Garage A Trois, but he keeps a busy schedule of sitting in with all sorts of groups, appearing and teaching at clinics, and generally building an impressive Empire of the Drum.  His most recent recording project is a foray into a more traditional jazz setting -- the piano trio -- on his upcoming release, Conversations.  In the meantime, enjoy a few of Moore's more solo-ish appearances for this week's Video Jukebox.  Moore will be talking about Conversations in general and setting up tracks from the album on this Sunday's upcoming Time Warp on WDNA.

Movie Notes - Stax-Volt Revue 1967 European Tour

Right now I'm reading the outstanding history of the Stax/Volt record label and recording studio by Robert Gordon, Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion.  In addition to the many insights the book provides into the work of Steve Cropper, Booker T. Jones, Duck Dunn, Al Jackson Jr., Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, and all the rest, it puts the institution of Stax squarely in proper place as part of the history of the great city of Memphis and the civil rights movement in general.  One of my favorite parts of the book is author Gordon's account of the Stax/Volt European Tour in 1967, which brought a certain soul sensibility to new parts of the world.  Booker T and the MGs were the band for the tour, and they tore it up night after night.  I found a compressed version of one of the dates on that tour, the Stax gang playing for an audience in Norway (Oslo, I presume).  Jackson and Dunn are amazing, to be sure.

Sunday Time Warp - Membership Drive Edition

This week and next I'll be calling upon listeners -- over the air and online -- to either renew their WDNA station membership or become a new member.  As incentive, this weekend only, I'll be giving away special Sunday Time Warp premiums: copies of Jesse Fischer and Soul Cycle's Homebrew, as well as books -- biographies of Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderly, and Billy Eckstein.  In general, the station has also listed a number of fine CD's available for just a basic membership -- collections from Art Pepper, Chet Baker, Cole Porter, and Sonny Rollins, releases from Eddie Palmieri, Palo!, and Gregory Porter, and -- my favorite -- a 60th anniversary blues collection from Delmark.  Also, we'll reset music from some of the best Segment3 guests from the past six months.  You could give online anytime, but it does help my show if you can wait and give during the broadcast.  If we make our goal for the show, next week I will play an entire show's worth of fusion -- old and new.  Between 1 and 3 pm, when the time comes, go here to DONATE!
